Concrete doesn’t fail because of bad luck with the weather — it fails because it got poured on a day the weather made a bad decision for it. In Napa and Solano County, that means two very different threats at opposite ends of the calendar: winter rain and summer heat. Here’s the window that avoids both, and what to do if your project has to happen outside it.
The Two Enemies of a Good Pour
Fresh concrete needs a controlled amount of water to cure properly — not more, not less. Rain adds uncontrolled water to curing concrete, which slows the cure and can create surface weaknesses or scaling. Even light rain within the first 4-8 hours after a pour can damage the finish before it’s set enough to resist it.
Extreme heat causes the opposite problem: surface water needed for proper curing evaporates too fast, which can cause plastic shrinkage cracking before the slab even fully hardens. Concrete cures best between 50-60°F, and ideally shouldn’t be poured when temperatures will drop below 40°F or climb above 90°F for extended periods.
The Ideal Window: Mid-May Through October
For most of Napa and Solano County, the reliable window runs from about mid-May through October. By that point, winter rains have typically stopped, the ground has had time to drain, and soil moisture has stabilized — which matters as much for the base under your slab as it does for the pour itself.
March and April are the trap months. It’s tempting to schedule spring projects early, but Northern California’s rainy season doesn’t reliably end on the calendar’s schedule — some years it extends into late May. We watch the forecast closely on early-season projects rather than committing to a date based on the month alone.
Why Summer Isn’t Automatically Safe Either
Inland areas like Fairfield and Vacaville regularly see summer afternoon temperatures well above 90°F, sometimes into the 100s. That’s outside the ideal curing range in the other direction. On hot-weather pours, we adjust the schedule rather than the calendar:
- Early morning pours to get the concrete placed and finished before peak afternoon heat.
- Curing compounds or wet curing (blankets, misting) to slow surface evaporation.
- Adjusted mix design when conditions call for it, to manage set time.
Napa’s coastal-influenced climate tends to run milder than Fairfield or Vacaville’s more inland heat, which is one more reason “best time to pour” isn’t identical across our whole service area — it depends on which part of the county you’re in.
What Happens If You Pour in the Rain or Cold
Pouring outside the ideal window doesn’t automatically ruin a project — contractors pour concrete year-round, including in worse climates than ours. But it does require compensating steps: covering the slab immediately if rain is a risk, monitoring temperature and adjusting cure time, or in cold conditions, using insulated blankets to keep the concrete above the minimum curing temperature. Skipping those steps to save time is where weather-related cracking and scaling actually come from — not the season itself.
How to Plan Around California’s Unpredictable Spring
