If you’ve watched a neighbor’s driveway develop cracks and slab separation within a few years of being poured, that’s not bad luck. It’s the ground underneath it. Solano and Napa Counties sit on a lot of expansive clay, and expansive clay doesn’t sit still.

The soil problem nobody mentions upfront

Expansive clay swells when it soaks up winter rain and shrinks back down once the dry season hits. That movement happens underneath the slab, not on top of it, so you don’t see it coming. A driveway poured without accounting for that cycle will crack, heave, or separate at the joints, usually within the first few years.

The fix isn’t a thicker slab on its own. It’s proper base prep: compaction done right, a gravel base deep enough for the soil conditions on that specific lot, and control joints placed where the concrete will actually move instead of wherever’s convenient to pour. Skip any one of those and the slab is fighting the ground from day one.

What actually determines how long it lasts

A few things matter more than most people expect going in.

Thickness and reinforcement. A standard driveway runs about 4 inches. If you’re parking anything heavier than a car on it (a boat, an RV, a work truck) you want 5 to 6 inches with rebar, not just wire mesh. Wire mesh is fine for a car. It won’t hold up under sustained heavier loads on shifting soil.

Finish. A broom finish is the standard, no-frills option. Stamped or exposed aggregate costs more to install, but there’s a practical reason a lot of homeowners here choose it anyway: it hides minor surface wear and hairline cracking better than plain concrete does over time.

Access and site conditions. Removing an old driveway, working around tight access, or hand-carrying equipment because a truck can’t reach the pour site all affect how the job gets done and how well it holds up, not just how long it takes.

Drainage. This region swings from soaked winters to bone-dry summers. A driveway that doesn’t route water away from the slab is one of the more common reasons people end up calling a contractor back a year or two later.

What to ask before you sign anything

A few questions will tell you more than a sales pitch will. What thickness and reinforcement are they quoting, and why that spec for your situation? Is base prep and compaction included, or handled as an afterthought? How are they handling drainage on your specific lot? Where are the control joints actually going, and why there?

A contractor who can answer those specifically, instead of giving you a generic answer and moving on, is telling you something about how the job will actually go.
